A big news related to the politics and infrastructure development of Tamil Nadu is coming out. The state government has officially completely canceled the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur in Kanchipuram district. Announcing this decision in the Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay has termed it as a historic victory of the long struggle of local villagers, farmers and environmentalists. After this big decision, the public movement going on in Parandur and more than 20 surrounding villages for the last three years has now ended.

Chief Minister Vijay clarified that his government is not against development and infrastructure, but no such cost of development can be accepted which destroys the environment and takes away the livelihood of the common people. Fulfilling the promise made to the affected villagers before the elections, he said that this entire area of Kanchipuram was extremely ecologically sensitive and fertile. Of the proposed 5,369 acres of land, about 47.6 percent was highly fertile agricultural land, where three crops were grown a year. Additionally, one-fourth of the area was surrounded by lakes and water-bodies, construction on which could pose a risk of severe flooding in Chennai.

Immediately after this big announcement, the MLAs of the opposition party DMK created a ruckus in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and demanded an immediate discussion, after which a walkout was carried out. On the other hand, experts believe that the passenger pressure at Chennai’s existing Meenambakkam airport is going to reach its peak in the coming years. Keeping this in mind, CM Vijay has assured that the state government will not ignore the aviation needs. Officials have been instructed to look for an alternative site where fertile land is not damaged, till then emphasis will be laid on increasing the operational capacity of the existing airport.
