Pitru Paksha 2026: Pitru Paksha starting from 26th September, throw out these 4 inauspicious things from the house today itself before the arrival of ancestors.

In the Sanatan Dharma tradition, the 16-day period of Pitru Paksha i.e. Shraddha Paksha is considered to be the most sacred period for expressing reverence, offerings and gratitude towards ancestors, family deities and ancestors. According to the Panchang, Pitru Paksha is starting from 26th September this year, which will continue till Sarvapitri Amavasya of Ashwin month. According to religious and mythological beliefs, during these 16 days, ancestors visit the homes of their descendants in subtle form and are satisfied after seeing their loyalty, service spirit and goodness.

It is clearly mentioned in the scriptures that in a house where dirt, negative energy and Vaastu defects reside, the ancestors get displeased and return without giving blessings, due to which a situation of ‘Pitru Dosh’ arises in life. Therefore, before the start of Pitru Paksha on 26th September, along with thorough cleaning of the house, these 4 inauspicious and negative things should be thrown out immediately so that one can receive the immense blessings of the ancestors.

Cracked or broken mirror kept in any corner of the house, broken window glass or cracked crockery/glass utensils create huge Vastu defects.

  • Cause of fault: In Vastu Shastra, mirror and glass are considered to be the factors of reflection of Rahu and energy. The negative waves emanating from a broken mirror pollute the mental environment of the house.

  • Effect on father’s side: It is believed that the presence of broken objects brings ‘grief energy’ into the house. When ancestors enter the house, such negative energy disturbs them. Therefore, show the way out to any broken glass or cracked utensils lying in the house today itself.

Often, broken idols of God, cracked Shivling or old and torn religious pictures are kept in the puja room or in some corner of the house.

  • Scriptural rules: Worshiping any broken idol or keeping it at home is considered prohibited in the scriptures. The life energy gets exhausted from the broken idol and it becomes the center of Vaastu defect.

  • Immersion Method: Before the start of Pitru Paksha, complete purification of the place of worship. If any statue is broken or the picture is in a dilapidated state, then respectfully immerse it in a holy river, flowing water or wrap it in a clean cloth near the root of a Peepal tree.

A stopped clock hanging on the wall, a stalled timepiece kept on the table or a faulty electronic item lying in the drawer for years blocks the progress of time in the house.

  • Energy Barrier: In astrology and Vaastu, clock is considered a symbol of time cycle and progress of life. A stopped clock brings misfortune, indolence and financial stagnation in the house.

  • Junk Disposal: If the watch’s battery is drained, insert a new cell immediately and turn it on. If it’s completely worn out or an old electronic device is just taking up space, trash it. During Pitru Paksha, every corner of the house should be filled with dynamic and clean energy.

Old worn out shoes and slippers, broken slippers, torn blankets and mattresses scattered at the main entrance of the house or under the stairs attract the negative energy of Saturn and poverty.

  • Purification of main door: The arrival of ancestors is considered to be from the main entrance of the house. If there is a pile of broken shoes, slippers or garbage at the main entrance, it is considered disrespect to the ancestors.

  • Rites and rules: Throw away unused, torn shoes and slippers immediately and clean the main door by wiping it with water mixed with Ganges water. Remove old, tattered and smelly bedding and use only clean, washed and scented clothes at home.

Along with removing negative objects, some Satvik traditions must be followed in the house to welcome Pitru Paksha:

  • Spraying of Ganga water and cow urine: Sprinkle Ganga water mixed with a little cow urine all over the house, especially the kitchen, worship place and main entrance. This makes the environment completely germ-free and spiritually pure.

  • Camphor and Google Incense: Show camphor, clove and pure Google incense in the house every evening. Negative bacteria and microscopic defects are automatically eliminated by its aroma.

  • Balance of north and south direction: The south direction of the house is considered to be of Yama and ancestors. Always keep this direction heavy and clean, while keeping the north-east (northeast) completely light and clean so that there is a continuous flow of positive energy.

By removing these unwanted things from the house in time, you can fill your house with positive energy, due to which the blessings of the ancestors will shower happiness, peace and prosperity on the entire family in the Pitru Paksha starting from 26th September.
