Pitru Paksha 2024: Why are crows fed during Shraadh? | News India

Pitru Paksha (Shraddha) 2024: Pitru Paksha is considered very important in Hinduism. This year Pitru Paksha is starting from Tuesday, September 17. During Pitru Paksha, on one hand, the ancestors are offered tarpan and donations are given to them, on the other hand, crows are fed during Shraddha. In such a situation, let us know from astrologer Radhakant Vats why there is a tradition of feeding crows during Shraddha and what is its importance.

Why should crows be fed during paternity leave?
According to legend, once when Lord Shri Ram was in exile with Mother Sita, the son of Devraj Indra came to Shri Ram's hut in the form of a crow. There he saw that Shri Ram was sleeping and Mother Sita was massaging his feet.

Devraj Indra's son in the form of a crow, eager to test Mata Sita's patience, injured Mata Sita's feet with his beak. Mata Sita's feet were bleeding but even after this Sita did not say anything, but Shri Ram woke up.

When Shri Ram saw Mata Sita injured, he shot an arrow from his bow to kill those crows. At that time, Devraj Indra's son in the form of a crow realized his mistake and apologized to Shri Ram and Mata Sita.

Shri Ram forgave the crow and gave him a boon that from now on the crow will remember his every birth. It is only through the crow that a person can make his ancestors attain salvation or moksha. Feeding the crow after the Shraddha makes the ancestors happy.

After this boon, when Shri Ram's exile was about to end and he had to perform the shraddha of his father Dashrath, then mother Sita performed the tarpan and shraddha rituals of her father-in-law Dashrath with the help of a crow. This tradition has been going on since then.
