Petrol-Diesel Price: What are the prices of petrol-diesel today? View rates from Delhi to Patna

In this busy period of festive season when the traffic on the roads across the country is at its peak, the eyes of the drivers and daily commuters are fixed on the prices of petrol and diesel every morning. India’s major public sector oil marketing companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have officially updated the latest prices of petrol and diesel at 6:00 am today. Despite the ongoing fluctuations in crude oil prices in the global market and Brent crude trading around 74 to 76 dollars per barrel, the general public has got a big relief in the Indian domestic market. Even today, oil companies have not made any changes in the retail prices of fuel and the prices of petrol and diesel have remained stable in the major metros of the country. This stability is proving to be quite comforting for common middle class families, transport sector, farmers and logistics companies.

There is a difference in the prices of petrol and diesel due to different rates of VAT and local taxes in the four largest metros of the country.

  • National Capital New Delhi: Petrol is available at the most affordable rates in Delhi. Here today petrol is being sold at ₹ 94.77 per liter (₹ 102.12 per liter at centers without revised VAT) and diesel at ₹ 87.67 per liter (₹ 95.20 per liter at alternative pumps).

  • Financial capital Mumbai: Petrol in Mumbai today remained at ₹103.44 per litre, while diesel remained steady at ₹89.97 per liter due to higher VAT and cess in Maharashtra.

  • Kolkata: In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, the price of one liter petrol has been recorded at ₹ 103.94, while diesel is available at ₹ 90.76 per litre.

  • Chennai: In Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, petrol is trading at ₹ 100.85 per liter and diesel at ₹ 92.44 per liter.

In the big states of North India, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, there is a difference of a few rupees in every district depending on the freight charges and state level tax structure.

  • Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): In Lucknow, the city of nawabs, petrol is available today at a stable price of ₹94.65 per liter (₹101.89 per liter at many major pumps), while diesel is selling at ₹87.83 per liter (or ₹95.36 per litre). Rates in Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Prayagraj are also in the same range.

  • Patna (Bihar): Due to higher state level VAT rates in Patna, the capital of Bihar, petrol is available today at ₹ 105.58 per liter, while the price of diesel remains at ₹ 92.38 per liter. Rates in Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur and Gaya also remain above Rs 105.

  • Other major states: In Jaipur, Rajasthan, petrol is ₹ 104.88 and diesel is ₹ 90.36 per liter. Whereas in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, petrol is trading at ₹ 106.42 and diesel at ₹ 91.75 per liter.

This question often comes in the minds of consumers that when crude oil is imported at the same price, then why do the prices of petrol and diesel differ so much in different states and cities? In fact, the retail price you pay at the petrol pump is only 45 to 50 percent of the cost of the original fuel. The remaining half is made up of taxes and other duties from the central and state governments.

  1. Basic Crude Oil and Refining Cost: Basic cost of producing petrol and diesel in Indian refineries by purchasing crude oil from the international market.

  2. Central Excise Duty: Fixed tax imposed on every liter by the central government.

  3. Dealer Commission: Fixed commission per liter received by the petrol pump owner (approximately ₹3 to ₹4 per litre).

  4. State Government VAT (Value Added Tax): Every state government imposes VAT and cess in different percentages according to its revenue needs. For example, Andaman and Nicobar offers the cheapest petrol in the country (about ₹ 82 per liter) due to very low VAT, whereas in states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan, due to heavy VAT, prices reach between ₹ 105 to ₹ 110.

  5. Transportation Charges: The greater the distance of the petrol pump from the refinery or oil depot, the more will be added to the transportation cost.

Crude oil has been under pressure in the global energy market for the last few months due to geopolitical tensions and production policies of OPEC+ countries. While on one hand there is a possibility of supply disruption due to tensions in the Middle East, on the other hand China’s weak industrial demand has kept crude oil prices within a range. India imports more than 85 percent of its total oil consumption from abroad. Indian refineries have been able to balance costs by purchasing cheaper and heavier crude from Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Government oil marketing companies have now made substantial profits after recovering earlier losses (under-recoveries), due to which they are refraining from increasing domestic pump prices despite the immediate jump in international prices.
