Petrol Diesel Price Today: New rates released on September 17, know the latest prices of petrol and diesel in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow.

Amidst the ongoing fluctuations in crude oil prices in the international market, Indian Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have released the latest prices of petrol and diesel today on September 17. At the national level, oil companies—Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) have kept the basic fuel prices largely stable. However, due to VAT, local cess and freight charges in different states, there is a difference in the retail prices of petrol and diesel in every city.

The rates have been fixed as per the new rates applicable from 6 am today in the metropolitan cities and major state capitals of the country.

The per liter prices of petrol and diesel in the four major metros of the country on September 17 were recorded as follows:

Note: Petrol and diesel remain the cheapest in Delhi due to lower VAT rates on fuel compared to all metros, while in Mumbai and Kolkata prices are relatively higher due to higher local taxes.

The retail prices of fuel today in major cities of NCR and Uttar Pradesh are as follows:

• Lucknow: Petrol at ₹101.86 per liter and diesel at ₹95.36 per litre.

• Noida/Greater Noida: Petrol at ₹101.96 per liter and diesel at ₹95.44 per litre.

• Gurugram (Haryana): Petrol ₹102.97 per liter and diesel ₹95.64 per litre.

• Jaipur (Rajasthan): Petrol at ₹113.19 per liter and diesel at ₹98.25 per litre.

• Patna (Bihar): Petrol around ₹115.07 per liter and diesel around ₹99.36 per litre.

• Bengaluru (Karnataka): Petrol at ₹111.68 per liter and diesel at ₹99.56 per litre.

The base price of petrol and diesel in India is decided by the central government and oil refineries, but by the time it reaches the consumer’s pump, various taxes and fees are added:

• Central Excise Duty: A fixed tax imposed by the central government.

• State Level VAT: Each state government imposes VAT or cess ranging from 15% to 35% as per its revenue requirements, due to which the prices change as the state changes.

• Dealer Commission and Freight Charges: The transportation cost of delivering fuel from the oil depot to the petrol pump (depending on the distance) and the commission of the petrol pump operators are added to this.
