Many consumers have a question in their minds that how the final price of petrol and diesel available at the pump is decided after crude oil is purchased in barrels internationally:

  • Base Price and Refining: Crude oil purchased from the international market is brought to the refinery and converted into petrol and diesel, which decides the base price.

  • Central Excise Duty: A fixed excise duty is imposed on fuel by the central government.

  • Dealer Commission: Oil companies pay fixed dealer commission per liter of petrol and diesel to petrol pump owners.

  • State Level VAT: On top of this, each state government imposes Value Added Tax (VAT) at different percentages. This is the reason why different prices of petrol and diesel of the same oil company are seen in different states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar.
