The country’s major government oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have released the latest retail prices of petrol and diesel at 6 am on 03 October 2026. There has been no major change in fuel prices at the national level and rates have remained stable in most cities. However, there has been a slight variation of a few rupees in different states and cities depending on the local municipal tax, VAT and freight charges. Retail fuel prices are decided every morning after reviewing the crude oil prices in the international market and the dollar-rupee exchange rate.
Talking about the four major metros of the country, the prices of petrol and diesel remain stable in the national capital Delhi.
-
New Delhi: Today petrol is being sold at Rs 102.12 per liter in the national capital, while the price of diesel remains at Rs 95.20 per liter.
-
Mumbai: In the country’s financial capital Mumbai, fuel prices always remain high in metropolitan cities due to the VAT rates imposed by the state government. In Mumbai, the price of petrol remains at Rs 111.21 per liter and the price of diesel at Rs 97.83 per liter.
-
Kolkata: In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, petrol is stable at Rs 113.51 per liter, while diesel is available at Rs 97.80 per liter.
-
Chennai: In Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, the rate of petrol has been recorded at Rs 107.74 per liter and the rate of diesel has been recorded at Rs 97.35 per liter. Delhi’s prices remain the cheapest among the four metros because the local VAT rates there have been kept relatively balanced.
In the cities of Uttar Pradesh and National Capital Region (NCR), lakhs of people use their personal vehicles for daily commuting, due to which the daily fuel prices are closely monitored. On October 3, in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, the price of petrol was recorded at Rs 101.86 per liter and the price of diesel was recorded at Rs 95.36 per liter. Whereas in the major cities of NCR Noida and Greater Noida, petrol is being sold at around Rs 102.12 per liter and diesel at around Rs 95.20 per liter. Almost the same rates are applicable in Ghaziabad also. In Patna, the capital of Bihar, petrol is being sold at Rs 105.18 per liter and diesel at Rs 94.04 per liter, while in Jaipur, Rajasthan, petrol is being sold at Rs 104.88 per liter and diesel at Rs 90.36 per liter. Petrol is trading around Rs 110.91 per liter in Bengaluru, the major tech hub of South India, and around Rs 115.73 per liter in Hyderabad.
Often a question arises in the minds of common consumers that when crude oil is imported at the same rate throughout the country, then why are the prices of petrol and diesel different in different states and even in different districts of the same state. The biggest reason for this is tax structure and transportation cost. When the fuel is ready and released from the refinery, Central Excise Duty is imposed on it by the Central Government, which remains the same throughout the country. After this, when the oil enters the states, each state government collects Value Added Tax (VAT) and Cess as per its convenience. In states where VAT rates are high, like Maharashtra, Telangana, Rajasthan or Andhra Pradesh, petrol and diesel are sold at a higher price. Apart from this, the petrol pump dealer’s commission and the transportation cost (freight charge) of taking oil from the refinery to the depot also play an important role in determining the local price.
India imports more than 85 percent of its total crude oil requirement from other countries. This is the reason why the movement in the prices of Brent crude and WTI crude in the international market has a direct impact on India’s oil economy. Globally, when geopolitical tensions, production policies of OPEC+ countries and US dollar strengthen, the import cost of crude increases. However, despite fluctuations in international crude oil prices for some time now, Indian oil companies have kept domestic retail prices stable so that there is no sudden additional burden of inflation on the general consumers and the freight sector.
