New Delhi, 06 September (HS). The petition seeking a ban on Netflix's web series IC 814-The Kandahar Hijack has been withdrawn from the Delhi High Court. The petitioner told the court that Netflix has put a disclaimer in this web series and has given the correct details of the names of the terrorists involved in the Kandahar hijack.
This petition was filed by Surjeet Singh Yadav. The petition said that by giving Hindu names to the terrorists, their real identity has been presented with false names. The petition said that the Netflix series IC 814-The Kandahar Hijack has been presented by hiding the real identity of the terrorists involved in the 1999 incident.
The web series IC 814-The Kandahar Hijack is based on the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane on 24 December 1999. 154 passengers and crew members were traveling in this plane. This plane was to come from Kathmandu to Delhi, but as soon as the plane took off, it was hijacked by terrorists within 40 minutes. The hijackers were associated with the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. This plane was diverted to Kandahar in Afghanistan, which was under the control of the then Taliban at that time.
After the hijacking of the plane, during the eight-day long events, the terrorists demanded the release of Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar. Due to heavy pressure and keeping in mind the safety of the lives of the hijacked passengers, the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government agreed to release the terrorists. The then Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh himself went to Kandahar to release the terrorists.
The web series IC 814-The Kandahar Hijack is directed by Anubhav Sinha, which released on Netflix on 29 August. Vijay Verma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor and other actors have worked in this web series. This web series is accused of distorting facts about terrorists. The names of the terrorists in it are Shankar and Bhola. Objecting to these names, it has been said that the real identity of the terrorists, who were associated with Islamic extremist groups, has been hidden. A campaign was run on Netflix with the hashtag Boycott Netflix regarding this.
