Islamabad, 11 November (HIST). The air quality index (AQI) in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, reached a dangerous level of 509. This dangerous level of polluted air has put Peshawar among the most polluted cities in the world. The hazy air that was covering the cities of Punjab province of the country has now moved towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and engulfed Peshawar and surrounding districts.
The Parks and Horticulture Authority in Lahore has stepped up efforts to wash trees and plants along green belts and roadsides to reduce pollution. Daily tree washing work is going on on Mall Road, Jail Road and Ferozepur Road with similar activities on Gulberg, Model Town and other main thoroughfares. According to the Authority's Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo, the team is working from morning till night. Tree plantation is being given priority as an essential measure to deal with smog and pollution.
A recent report by the Green Master Plan has highlighted the factors responsible for the worrying increase in smog in Lahore. It said that the rapid growth of the city has turned Lahore into a concrete jungle. Due to this the problem of smog has increased in Lahore. Temperature has increased due to reduction in green spaces. Because of this the city has turned into a 'heat island'. This report shows that 33 square kilometers of industrial area is located near residential areas. This is a significant factor in Lahore's smog problem. It warned that if scattered industries were not shifted to designated industrial areas within the next decade, the situation could become even more serious.
It is noteworthy that AQI between 0 to 50 is considered good, between 51 and 100 satisfactory, between 101 and 200 moderate, between 201 and 300 poor, between 301 and 400 very poor, between 401 and 500 in the severe category. It is believed.
