Period Leave- The demand for menstrual leave for women employees has been raised for a long time. Now the Odisha government has taken initiative in this direction. Women employees working in government and private sectors in Odisha will get monthly leave with salary.
The state's Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida announced this after the Independence Day celebrations in Cuttack. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida is also the minister in charge of the Women and Child Development Department. She said, “This leave will be optional and can be taken on the first or second day of the menstrual cycle depending on the need of the woman.”
This initiative of the Odisha government is part of the 100-day action plan of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi's government. Majhi took oath as Chief Minister on June 12. Earlier in January 2023, Kerala introduced menstrual leave for women students in state universities. In the last Lok Sabha, Kerala Congress MP Hibi Eden tried to implement menstrual leave across the country through a private bill. In which three days leave was demanded for working women.
The Supreme Court has recently urged the central government to formulate a model policy on menstrual leave for women employees. The Supreme Court said that the issue falls under the purview of policy making rather than judicial intervention. In 2023, Kerala announced to provide menstrual leave to female students in all universities and institutions. Some private companies in India – such as Zomato – have also given menstrual leave, Zomato is giving 10 days of menstrual leave annually from 2020.
