At present, a picture is emerging from the political and administrative corridors of Jharkhand which is making everyone emotional and is also presenting a unique example of unwavering devotion towards one’s responsibility. The way the Chief Minister of the state, Hemant Soren, is discharging his government responsibilities these days even amidst his personal and family grief, is being discussed in the entire country. These days, after the demise of his late mother (Rupi Soren), traditional mourning and rites are being performed in his native village Nemra in Ramgarh district. Amidst all these religious and family rituals, Chief Minister Hemant Soren was seen wearing traditional attire i.e. wooden sandals on his feet and a simple white dhoti on his body, but even in this difficult and sensitive situation, he did not let the governance and administrative work of the state stop and is continuously signing government files from Nemra village itself.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has presented a real example of how big the responsibility of the head of a state is despite breaking mountains of family sorrows. According to the information received, when a leader or a person holding a high position is in such personal mourning, he usually completely stays away from public life and work for a few days, but the CM of Jharkhand has chosen the unique path of discharging both tradition and duty simultaneously. While on one hand Vedic chanting and traditional mourning rituals are being performed at his residence in Nemra, on the other hand there is a constant flow of officials coming and going for the state’s development works, policy decisions and approving emergency files. The Chief Minister has made it clear that due to his personal sorrow, no government work or development plan of the 3.25 crore people of Jharkhand should be disrupted.
As per the local customs and traditional culture of Jharkhand, the main member of the family has to be especially involved in various rituals organized for the peace and remembrance of the departed soul. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has performed the food serving and other traditional rituals for his mother Rupi Soren with full devotion, simplicity and rituals. During these religious and traditional events, instead of leather or modern shoes, he had traditional wooden ‘Khadau’ on his feet and only a white dhoti wrapped around his body, which is considered a symbol of mourning and renunciation in Indian culture. In the same traditional and simple attire, when the Chief Minister ordered the urgent administrative files sent from the Secretariat, studied them and signed them, everyone present there was surprised to see his working style.
At present, the administrative structure of Jharkhand government seems to be operating from Nemra village of Ramgarh outside the capital Ranchi. Many key ministers, cabinet colleagues and senior administrative officials of the state have reached Nemra in the last few days and met the Chief Minister and discussed the current law and order of the state, development plans and the agenda of upcoming administrative meetings. Many senior leaders and public representatives, including Minister of State for Defense Sanjay Seth and Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore, have reached Nemra and expressed their condolences to the Chief Minister and also sought his guidance on important government works. The Chief Secretary and other Secretary level officers are also reaching their native villages directly with files from the capital so that policy decisions do not get stalled in any department of the state.
Political analysts and experts believe that such a scene is rarely seen in modern era politics where a politician fulfills his responsibilities towards the public with such sensitivity even in the midst of the biggest and deepest grief of his family. On one hand, by wearing Khadaun in traditional attire, he is showing his deep devotion towards his soil and culture, on the other hand, by continuously signing the files, he is proving that he is trying to live up to the trust with which the people of Jharkhand have entrusted him with the chair, in every situation. This entire incident has given a new message in the politics of Jharkhand and this dedication of Chief Minister Hemant Soren is being praised among the opposition parties as well as the general public.
In the coming days, when these traditional mourning and rites will be completely completed, the Chief Minister will return to Ranchi for his regular meetings, but in these few days, the way the entire administration of Jharkhand has been run from Nemra village itself, has become a unique page of administrative history. This confluence of simplicity, tradition, personal sensitivity and state duty has drawn a long line in the politics of Jharkhand, which shows that even in the storm of crisis and grief, the resolve of a true public leader never wavers.
