People used to make fun, today by selling the same ‘free water’ they have created a Rs 7000 crore Bisleri company; Know the complete success story of Ramesh Chauhan

Nowadays everyone is talking about new startups and innovative business ideas. Some are making money from AI and some are building businesses worth crores from scrap. But have you ever thought that in a country where water from wells, ponds and rivers is available absolutely free, one can become a billionaire by selling water? In 1969, when Jayantilal Chauhan presented this idea to the world, people made fun of him, considering him crazy. But his same visionary thinking and determination have today made Bisleri a huge company worth Rs 7000 crore.

Journey from Italian pharmaceutical company to becoming India’s number one brand

The history of Bisleri is quite interesting. It was originally an Italian pharmaceutical company that sold malaria medicines. Its original owner was Felice Bisleri. Seeing the potential of the Indian market, Parle Group later bought it for just Rs 4 lakh. In 1969, Ramesh Chauhan took charge of Bisleri. His initial intention was to establish it as a soda brand, but he also continued to sell bottled water. In the sixties, selling water in glass bottles was considered a stupidity, but gradually people started understanding the importance of safe and pure water and this brand became a necessity for every Indian.

Rumors of deal with Tata put to rest, daughter takes command

Some time ago there was news in the market that 82 year old Ramesh Chauhan wants to sell the company due to his increasing age. There were also reports of big companies like Tata and Reliance joining this race. It was also claimed in media reports that his only daughter Jayanti Chauhan has no special interest in this business. However, later all these things proved to be mere rumours. Today Jayanti Chauhan is handling this huge business of Bisleri with full strength. Presently the company has more than 122 operational plants, a fleet of 5000 trucks and a very strong network of more than 4500 distributors.

Fast growing bottled water market in India

Bottled water business has now become a huge industry in India. At present, India is among the top ten countries in the world where packed water is used the most. According to the report of Trade Promotion Council of India, by 2026 this market will be worth $9.14 billion and by 2031 there is every possibility of it touching the figure of $14.9 billion. Despite big competitors like Kinley and Aquafina in this huge market, Bisleri still holds the number one position with a huge share of about 40 percent.
