People of Sri Lanka will elect their President today, voting is going on, mandate will come tomorrow | News India

Colombo, September 21 (HS). Voting for the presidential election in Sri Lanka started at 7 am today. This is the first presidential election in Sri Lanka after the worst economic crisis of the year 2022. About 1 crore 70 lakh people will exercise their franchise in this election. More than 13,400 polling stations have been set up across the country for the election.

During the economic recession, the Sri Lankan government had to face the anger of the public. 38 candidates are in the fray for the presidential election. The main contest is between the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Voters will be able to exercise their right till 5 pm. The election result will be declared on Sunday. 75-year-old Wickremesinghe took office in July 2022. His predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to flee the country after protests during the economic recession. He later had to resign.
