According to the Indian Railways Act 1989, taking a selfie while standing on the side of a railway track or platform can lead to a fine and up to six months in jail. According to the existing rules and legal provisions of the Railways, if a person is caught taking a selfie on the side of the railway track or platform, a fine of Rs 1000 is imposed on him. Apart from this, there can also be imprisonment of up to six months. Any appeal against this can be made only in the Railway Tribunal.

These rules apply at railway stations and around train tracks

The Railways Act, 1989 applies to all railway junctions, stations, halts etc. premises and around the railway lines i.e. tracks in the country. The Railway Act provides for various penalties and fines for violation of railway safety rules.

Sections 145 and 147 of the Railways Act, 1989 provide for fine and punishment for anyone caught risking his life by taking a selfie inside the railway premises. Under this law, taking a selfie while standing on the railway platform towards the railway track is a serious crime.

To avoid any kind of accident, unnecessary trouble and crowding, it is important to avoid taking selfies while standing on the side of train tracks or platforms. The Ministry of Railways and Indian Railways keep making safety appeals through various advertisements, announcements, alerts and social media platforms. It says that taking a selfie while standing on the side of a railway track or platform is a threat to your life and that of other passengers. Rail passengers are repeatedly reminded that it is unsafe to do so. Besides this, it is also a punishable offense under the Railway Act.
