In Sanatan Dharma, Ekadashi fasts are considered to have special spiritual significance, but Ekadashi falling in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month is considered extremely rare and fruitful in itself. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, absorbed in Yoga Nidra in Kshirsagar for four months from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi (Devshayani Ekadashi), changes sides in his sleeping posture on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi.
This holy date is called Parivartini Ekadashi because of the change of place of the Lord i.e. taking a turn. It is also celebrated with devotion in many areas by the names of Padma Ekadashi, Jaljhulani Ekadashi, Dol Gyaras and Vaman Ekadashi. It is believed that by observing a fast on this day and worshiping the Vaman form of Lord Vishnu, all the sins committed knowingly or unknowingly are destroyed and one gets the same virtuous results as the Vajpayee Yagya.
According to the Panchang calculations, to avoid confusion among the devotees regarding the Ekadashi date of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, the auspicious time and timetable are as follows:

Start of Ekadashi Tithi: From 01:53 pm on 21st September 2026.

End of Ekadashi Tithi: Till 03:44 pm on 22 September 2026.

Value of Udayatithi: Udayatithi has special significance in Sanatan tradition, hence householders and devotees of Vaishnav sect 22 September 2026 (Tuesday) Will observe waterless or fruitless fast on Parivarti Ekadashi.

Abhijeet Muhurta (best time for worship): On September 22, from 11:49 am to 12:38 pm.

Time of fasting: It will be as per scriptures to break the fast on 23 September 2026 (Wednesday) between 06:10 am to 08:36 am before the end of Dwadashi Tithi.
On the day of Parivarti Ekadashi, the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu i.e. Vaman Dev Special prayers are offered. According to the story described in Padma Purana:

Demon king Bali had taken control of all the three worlds and Amravati of Devraj Indra with his muscle power and harsh penance.

On the prayer of the gods, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vaman Brahmin to Maharishi Kashyap and Mother Aditi.

Vaman Dev reached the Mahayagya of King Bali and requested only three paces of land in donation. As soon as King Bali took the pledge, Vaman Dev assumed a huge form and measured the earth in the first step, heaven and space in the second step.

When there was no space left to take the third step, the generous king Bali put his head forward. Pleased with Bali’s devotion and integrity, God made him the lord of the underworld and gave him a boon that he himself would reside as a guard at the door of King Bali during Chaturmas.
To get good results and fulfill your wishes, worship in the following way on this day:

Morning bath and resolution: Wake up in Brahma Muhurta and take bath with water mixed with Ganga water and wear yellow clothes. After offering Arghya to the Sun God, take water and Akshat in hand and take a pledge to fast.

Panchamrit Abhishekam of God: Spread a yellow cloth on a wooden post at the worship place of the house and install the idol of Lord Vishnu and Shaligram ji. Abhishekam with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, Ganga water).

Offering of Tulsi Dal and yellow fruits: Apply yellow sandalwood tilak to God, offer yellow flowers, yellow clothes and seasonal fruits. Keep in mind that Tulsi leaves (plucked a day before) must be included in the offering to Shri Hari.

Text of Vishnu Sahastranam: Light incense and lamp and chant ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay’ Mahamantra 108 times. Listen to the sacred story of Parivarti Ekadashi and at the end perform aarti with camphor.

Importance of donation: On the day of Ekadashi, completely give up rice, tamasic food and grains. Next day, before Parana, donate curd, copper vessel, seasonal fruits and Dakshina as per your capacity to a Brahmin or a needy person.
