Paris Olympics 2024: Indian women wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal has been rejected by the Sports Tribunal. Vinesh made it to the final of the women's 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics, but was disqualified as she was 100 grams over the weight limit before the gold medal match.
However, Vinesh filed an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) demanding a joint silver medal, which was completed. The decision on Vinesh's appeal kept getting postponed again and again, but now CAS has rejected her appeal, meaning her dream of winning a medal is shattered. This decision means that India will have only six medals including one silver and five bronze medals at the Paris Olympics.
PT Usha expressed disappointment over the decision
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha has expressed disappointment over the dismissal of Vinesh Phogat's appeal against United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by the Tribunal of Arbitration for Sports. The IOA president said in a statement, “I am shocked and disappointed by the decision of the sole arbitrator of the Tribunal of Arbitration for Sports on the appeal filed by wrestler Vinesh Phogat against United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee.” The August 14 decision to dismiss Vinesh's petition has significant implications for her and especially for the sports community.
Why did Vinesh appeal?
Vinesh, who had reached the final of the women's 50kg freestyle event last Tuesday with three wins, including over Japan's Yui Susaki, was knocked out of the title clash against American gold medallist Sarah Hildebrandt after being 100 grams over the cutoff at the morning weigh-in.
The wrestler appealed against the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport last Wednesday and demanded that she be awarded a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusnelis Guzman Lopez. Lopez lost to Vinesh in the semi-finals but later made it to the final after the Indian wrestler was disqualified. Vinesh announced her retirement from the sport a day after the disqualification, saying she did not have the strength to continue. However, veteran athletes from around the world have supported the 29-year-old wrestler who was competing in her third Olympic Games.
The decision was postponed three times
The hearing of the case was held on August 9 and the verdict was to be pronounced on the same day, but it was postponed till August 10. After this it was postponed till August 13. On Tuesday, it was reported that the verdict in Vinesh's case would be pronounced on August 16 at 9:30 pm, but the Sports Tribunal pronounced its verdict on Wednesday night itself, which has dashed Vinesh's hopes.
