World number one Iga Swiatek of Poland battled tough conditions to beat China's Wang Jiu in straight sets and enter the quarterfinals of the women's singles tennis event at the Paris Olympics.
Swiatek, a four-time French Open Grand Slam winner, beat Wang 6-2, 6-4 on clay and will next face eighth seed Daniela Collins of the United States, who beat Colombia's Camila Osorio 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Andy Murray also won the men's doubles. Murray, along with his partner Dan Evans, saved two match points to beat Belgium's Sander Gill and Joran Bligen 6-3, 6-7 (8), 11-9. Poprin defeats Wawrinka
In men's singles, Australia's Alexei Poprin advanced his campaign by defeating three-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5. He will next face Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Alexander Zverev of Germany who defeated Thomas Machac 6-3, 7-5. Americans Taylor Fitz and Tommy Paul also advanced. Fitz defeated Britain's Jack Draper 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2 and the Pole defeated Czech Republic's Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1.
