Paris Olympics 2024: Iga Swiatek advances, Nadal-Alcaraz pair wins

World number one Iga Swiatek of Poland battled tough conditions to beat China's Wang Jiu in straight sets and enter the quarterfinals of the women's singles tennis event at the Paris Olympics.

Swiatek, a four-time French Open Grand Slam winner, beat Wang 6-2, 6-4 on clay and will next face eighth seed Daniela Collins of the United States, who beat Colombia's Camila Osorio 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. In other women's singles matches, Slovakia's Anna Karolina defeated Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini of Italy 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 and Marta Kostyuk beat seventh seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Nadal and Alcaraz in the quarter finals

In men's doubles, Spain's Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz defeated Talon Griekspoor and Wesley Foolhof of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-7 (2), 10-2 to enter the quarterfinals. Andy Murray also won the men's doubles. Murray, along with his partner Dan Evans, saved two match points to beat Belgium's Sander Gill and Joran Bligen 6-3, 6-7 (8), 11-9. Andy Murray will retire from tennis after the Olympics.

Poprin defeats Wawrinka

In men's singles, Australia's Alexei Poprin advanced his campaign by defeating three-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5. He will next face Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Alexander Zverev of Germany who defeated Thomas Machac 6-3, 7-5. Americans Taylor Fitz and Tommy Paul also advanced. Fitz defeated Britain's Jack Draper 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2 and the Pole defeated Czech Republic's Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1.
