Senior leaders of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party BHIM, led by its president Vintik Singh, paid tribute to the student martyrs of Jammu who were martyred by police bullets during an agitation. While paying tribute to the student martyrs, Vintik Singh recalled that the main organizer of the student movement, Professor Bhim Singh, had escaped the police bullets. On 18 October 1966, thousands of students met Prof. Students under the leadership of Bhim Singh were marching on the streets of Jammu demanding the Congress leadership to bring all the murderers to justice, when bullets were fired resulting in the martyrdom of Gurcharan Singh. Singh recalled his sacrifice and said that due to this, not only a university but many other institutions and many professional colleges have opened in Jammu state. Whatever Jammu has got even under the present government, it has been achieved only through agitation. He said that the present generation should not forget the supreme sacrifices of the student martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting against the injustice done to Jammu province by the then ruling parties. He appealed to all the student organizations of Jammu and Kashmir from school to university level to get organized, so that we can effectively fight against the forces discriminating against Dogras.
