The Jharkhand High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident involving the gang rape and assault of a Spanish woman who had gone on a cross-country bike tour with her husband. The incident took place on March 1 at Kurumahat in Hansdiha police station area, about 300 km from Ranchi, when the couple was spending the night in a temporary tent.

Incidents of any type of crime against a foreign national can have serious national and international consequences, including impact on the country's tourism economy. The Jharkhand High Court said a sex-related offense against a foreign woman is likely to lead to adverse publicity against the country and could tarnish India's image across the world.

The court further informed that the woman speaks Spanish but it is not known whether she had access to a translator with the help of which her statement was recorded.

Further, due to the amendments made in the Code of Criminal Procedure and emphasis on scientific investigation in cases of rape related crimes, there is an urgent need to seek a report from the Superintendent of Police, Dumka regarding the progress of the investigation. Action has been taken so far in the case, the court further said.

The woman and her husband had traveled from Bangladesh to Dumka on two motorcycles with plans to travel to Bihar and then Nepal.

“We're in the hospital, and something happened to us that we wouldn't wish on anyone. Seven people raped me, and they beat and robbed us, although not many things were taken because all they wanted was to rape me. We are in the hospital with the police, it happened in India tonight,” the 28-year-old Spanish travel vlogger shared in her video post on IG.

He further said, “They attacked us, beat us, put a knife to our neck and said they would kill us… There were seven people there….”
