Panama's LPG tanker Limra catches fire in engine, Sri Lankan crew member dies

New Delhi, July 29 (HS). A Sri Lankan crew member who died after an engine fire on Panama LPG tanker Limra was rescued by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and taken to Kochi hospital. The patient was shifted to Aster Medcity Hospital for further treatment but despite all efforts, he could not be saved.

The Mumbai-based ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) received a call about a major fire in the engine room of LPG tanker Limra. The incident occurred at around 02.53 pm on Sunday, prompting the crew to raise a distress alarm. The ship was on its way from Chittagong (Bangladesh) to Khor Fakkan (Dubai). During the firefighting efforts, a 36-year-old Sri Lankan crew member was found missing. The crew member was later found seriously injured at 6.20 pm.

The ICG immediately provided him basic medical aid and dispatched ICG ship Abhinav to render assistance by activating rescue mechanism. The ICG further launched an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) from Kochi at around 6 pm for medical emergency. The injured Sri Lankan national was brought to Kochi at around 7.42 pm and admitted to Aster Medcity Hospital. Despite all efforts of doctors, his life could not be saved.
