Palestine meets new Prime Minister amid war, President appoints Mustafa

The Palestinian Authority (PA) got a new Prime Minister yesterday, Thursday 14 March. President Abbas appointed Mohammed Mustafa, one of Palestine's leading businessmen, as Prime Minister of Palestine. He has overseen the reconstruction of Gaza under Hamas Islamic rule.

According to local media, Mohammad Mustafa has also been an economic advisor to President Abbas for a long time. He replaced former Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh. Mohammad Mustafa has been made PM amid American pressure for reforms in the Palestinian Authority. They were chosen to help reconstruction efforts in Gaza after the first war between Israel and the Islamic militant group Hamas a decade ago.

What expectations do Palestine have from the new Prime Minister?

Palestinian leaders hope they can now improve the situation as they prepare to rebuild the area after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. The internationally recognized Palestinian Authority aims to reunify the Palestinian Authority after the war in Gaza.

Who is Mohammad Mustafa?

Mohammad Mustafa was born in 1954 in a town called Tulkarem. He received a Doctorate in Business Administration and Economics from George Washington University, USA. Mohammad Mustafa has also worked in many positions in the World Bank. Apart from this, he has also been the Deputy PM and Economy Minister of Palestine. Most recently, he is also the Chairman of the Palestine Investment Fund.

Mustafa facing challenges and economic crisis for Palestine

Palestinian political analyst Hani al-Masri emphasizes that the public wants real political change, not just a change in names. Despite being respected and educated, Mohammed Mustafa faces challenges in meeting public demands for improvements in conditions in the occupied West Bank. Israel's sanctions have created an economic crisis in the region.
