Pakistan: 'Undeclared martial law… shame on you', uproar over Imran Khan's release; PTI had warned | News India

Pakistan: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has alleged that its members were fired upon by the police during a rally in Islamabad on Sunday. PTI workers took out a rally demanding the release of party founder Imran Khan.

The party condemned the heavy firing on peaceful protesters in its social media posts, calling it an undeclared martial law. “Pakistanis have become accustomed to such scenes under this undeclared martial law. Islamabad police opened fire on peaceful Pakistanis who had gathered in large numbers for Imran Khan and PTI's rally in Islamabad. Shameful, disgusting, desperate, cowardly behavior by an illegitimate, authoritarian regime,” PTI said in a post on Twitter. “Once again, these shameful, illegal acts strengthen the resolve of the people to fight for 'real freedom'.”

People have given a big message: PTI
PTI further said that the police officers should be ashamed and the people have sent a big message today. PTI wrote in its post, 'These police officers should be ashamed for attacking the most peaceful crowd ever. IG Islamabad and the broker government should stop playing with the lives of people. This is absolutely disgusting and shameful, the people have sent a big message today!'

Imran has been in jail since last August,
The PTI on Sunday launched a rally on the outskirts of Islamabad. Activists from across the province gathered at the venue for the event, Dawn reported.

The rally began with party leader Hammad Azhar addressing the crowd, where he said supporters have gathered today to establish the rule of law and the supremacy of the constitution in the country. He said no obstacle can stop them today. “God willing, we will ensure the release of Imran Khan,” he said. The rally, which was initially scheduled for July and later in August, was postponed twice after authorities cancelled the permit citing security risks and fears of unrest. The party has been organising a rally to seek support for the release of Imran Khan, who has been in jail since last August.
