Punjab Water Level Report: The groundwater level of Punjab is continuously going down. The pre-monsoon (June 2023) groundwater level analysis report has made shocking revelations. The water situation in 16 districts of Punjab is getting worse.

There has been some relief in 4 districts, but the situation here is not very good either. Out of 20 out of 23 districts of Punjab, the water level in Sangrur district is the worst. In June 2013, the water level here was 38.37 meters, which reached 44.26 meters in June 2023.

The highest water level in Patiala was 37.95 meters in June 2013, which is now recorded at 43.32 meters. This district ranks second in the state in terms of falling water level. The highest water level in Pathankot was 15.26 meters in June 2013, which is recorded at 28.08 meters in June 2023.

Similarly, the decrease in water level in Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ropar, Nawanshahr and Tarn Taran districts is worrisome. Meanwhile, in 4 districts of Punjab, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali, there has been some improvement in the water level during the last 10 years. But the situation in Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib is still worrisome.

The water level in Fatehgarh Sahib is 33.87 metres and in Mohali it is 43.25 metres. At least in Gurdaspur the water level has deteriorated. But the maximum water level has improved. In June 2013, this minimum water level was 1.57 metres, which has been recorded at 2.87 metres in June 2023.

The maximum water level was 18.96 meters, which is now recorded at 17.52 meters. The main reason for the fall in water level in Punjab is the increase in paddy area. The paddy area in Punjab was 28 lakh hectares in 2013-14 which has reached 31 lakh hectares in 2024. Earlier irrigation was done through canals but now water is being taken from more than 14 lakh tube wells.
