Kolkata, 19 November (HS). The prices of vegetables and grains are skyrocketing in the markets of Kolkata. The rising prices of onion and potatoes have shocked the general public. On Tuesday, the task force conducted raids in Maniktala, Bagmari and Gurudas Market, but did not take any strict action against the traders.
Onion is being sold in the market at the rate of Rs 70 to 75 per kg and potato at the rate of Rs 35 to 40 per kg. At the same time, the price of onion in wholesale markets like Kole Market is Rs 50 to 55 per kg. Task force member Ravindranath Kole said that the wholesale price of onion in Kole market on Monday was Rs 1600 per bag, while on Tuesday in markets like Maniktala, traders are buying it at the rate of Rs 2700 per bag.
Ravindranath Kole said that the prices of onion and potatoes are likely to come down in the coming three-four days. He said that the new crop has not yet arrived in many markets. As new crops come into the market, prices will fall.
Small cauliflower is being sold for Rs 30-35, due to which common people are upset. However, the task force believes that the prices of winter vegetables will come down in the next few days.
Onion in the state mainly comes from Nashik in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Onion crop in these states was damaged due to heavy rains in September, leading to shortage in supply and increase in prices.
Ramchandra Sao, a trader at Maniktala market, said, “We sell at the price at which we buy in bulk, keeping a little profit. This information has also been given to the task force.”
