Mumbai: A businessman who filed an extortion complaint against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh has filed an application in the Bombay High Court, seeking quashing of the case. The petition claims that he was forced to complain to Singh.
Prosecutor Ketan Tanna claimed in the petition that the police had threatened to implicate Parambir Singh in a false case if he did not file a complaint against him and said he now wanted to clear his conscience by rectifying the mistake. The petition filed by Tanna is likely to be heard on October 8.
The businessman alleged in the petition that a conspiracy was hatched against Singh when he was embroiled in a dispute with the then Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition government. The then Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Pandey called himself outside the bungalow of the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and asked him to file a complaint of extortion against Parambir.
In July 2021, Tanna filed a complaint with the Thane Police that between January 2018 and February 2019, when Parambir Singh was the Thane Police Commissioner, he called the anti-extortion squad office and extorted Rs. A ransom of Rs 1.25 crore was demanded or a threat was given to implicate him in a serious case. Since he was under terrible pressure he could not reveal the truth, but now he wants to calm his mind by telling the truth.
The petition states that the petitioner has decided to unconditionally withdraw the charges and FIR and proceedings against all the accused.
Apart from Singh, 28 others were named in the FIR, including Pradeep Sharma and other senior officials as well as gangster Ravi Pujari.
In February 2021, Parambir Singh was transferred out of Mumbai and transferred to the Home Guards after an SUV loaded with explosives was found outside the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani. Police officer Sachin Vaze was arrested in the case.
Parambir Singh filed a complaint against the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh for taking Rs. Wazen alleges that he had asked to recover Rs 100 crore.
