New Delhi: With the US presidential election approaching on November 5, green card holders are being encouraged to obtain their citizenship and register to vote. Under President Joe Biden's administration, eligible green card holders will be able to obtain US citizenship in just three weeks, said Shekhar Narasimhan, president and founder of the Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Victory Fund.
In the US, over one million Indians, including doctors, engineers and scientists, are currently on a waiting list that could take decades to obtain permanent citizenship. However, Narasimhan stressed the importance of converting the excitement of the elections into proactive action and urged green card holders who have been living in the US for five years to immediately obtain citizenship and register to vote and actively participate in the upcoming elections.
According to a Department of Homeland Security report, there were more than one million green card holders in the United States in 2022, with about nine million eligible for naturalized citizenship.
The green card, officially known as the permanent resident card, grants a person permanent resident status in the United States. A green card holder must live in the US for at least five years to qualify for citizenship.
