New Delhi, 17 October (Hindustan Reporter). Two-time Olympic gold medalist Valerie Allman, International Event Ambassador of Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2024, shared her joy at seeing the tremendous turnout in this upcoming World Athletics Gold Label road race.
“I am thrilled to be a part of this incredible event,” Allman said during a press conference in New Delhi. The energy and dedication of over 36,000 participants at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon will definitely inspire and awe me.”
“These road races represent a unique challenge that I deeply respect,” said the American discus throw champion, who won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics with an impressive throw of 69.50 meters. As a field athlete, I am amazed by the stamina and determination of runners. It is going to be an exciting experience to see such a large number of people.”
Allman, recently nominated for 2024 Female Field Athlete of the Year, threw a personal best of 71.46 metres, the 15th-longest throw in the history of the sport.
Regarding visiting India, he said, “It is thrilling to be in this part of the world. I look forward to immersing myself in the spirit of the culture, experiencing the values of India and living like the locals. From exploring the streets to savoring the cuisine, I want to experience all the pleasures and return with a deeper understanding of this beautiful country.”
Speaking about the race and its focus on sustainability, Allman said, “The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is an example of how small choices can make a big impact. With initiatives like free metro access, promoting reusable water bottles and smart plastic management, it was inspiring to see 36,000 participants making intentional, sustainable choices. “These collective actions can have a truly global impact.”
On the importance of such measures for the future, Allman said, “It is absolutely necessary. With the challenges of global warming and the urgent need for recycling and upcycling, now is the time to take responsibility and be part of the change. Our planet desperately needs it, and being part of that change is empowering.”
He also expressed his sentiments regarding the participation of women in Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. He said, “It is incredible to learn about the history of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. From just 100 female participants 19 years ago to 30% now – this is a remarkable increase. It's really inspiring to see women stepping out of their comfort zone and being honored for it. I'm really looking forward to seeing it in Sunday's race.”
Allman's journey from dancer to Olympic champion serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes around the world. Her notable career includes becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in the discus throw at the Tokyo Olympics since 2008 and becoming the first woman to earn a world championship medal in the event with a bronze medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
