Kathua, August 30 (HS). Bachch Dua Dogra folk festival which symbolizes the bond between mother and child was celebrated with traditional fervor and customary rituals in district Kathua on Friday.

The festival of Bachchh Dua was celebrated with religious fervour across the district on the Dwadashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Mothers observed fast and went to water sources and temples to perform rituals like sweet rotis called rot, soaked black gram and praying for the long life of their sons in the temple. This fast is observed by eating food once. However, cow milk and dishes made from it and fried foods are not consumed in the meal. The fasting women prayed for the long life of their sons by performing traditional worship near various water sources of the city. Crowds of women started gathering since morning near the city's only Kashmir Canal, ancient Bavli, canals, temples and ponds and many other water sources. Collectively, women prayed to God for the longevity of their sons by performing their worship in the traditional way. The women performing the worship said that this tradition has been going on for the last several years.

He said that special prayers are offered to pray for the long life of their sons. It is believed that after the birth of Lord Krishna, mother Yashoda had visited and worshipped cow on this day. After which Lord Krishna himself appeared barefoot to cow in the forest. It is said in the scriptures that human life is the best among all lives. This is said so that one can make his life blessed under the pure shade of cow. Brahma resides in the back of cow. Vishnu resides in the neck, Rudra in the mouth, all the gods in the middle and gods and goddesses reside in many other parts. That is why women also observe fast on this day for the safety of their sons. It is believed that worshipping cow on this day brings happiness, prosperity and blessings of Goddess Lakshmi in the house.
