New York, June 13 (HS). After the 7-wicket loss against India in the ICC T20 World Cup on Wednesday, USA's acting captain Aaron Jones said that if his team had scored a total of 130 runs, it would have been a tough target for the 'Men in Blue'.
Arshdeep Singh's brilliant bowling (4 overs 9 runs 4 wickets) followed by an unbeaten 72-run partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dubey helped India continue their unbeaten campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup by defeating co-hosts USA by 7 wickets in a Group A match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday and secure their place in the Super 8.
Jones was pleased with his team's bowling efforts as they made India work hard for every run. There was potential for a major upset when the world's top-ranked T20 side lost just 39 runs for 3 wickets while chasing 111, with star openers Virat Kohli (0) and Rohit Sharma (3) both dismissed early by Saurabh Netravalkar. Ali Khan then came in and dismissed Rishabh Pant (18) with a superb delivery, but Surya and Shivam ensured there was no further loss.
Jones said after the match, “We fell short by 10-15 runs. If we had scored 130 runs, it would have been a difficult score, sometimes that is what happens. The players were very disciplined and they are proud of their bowling.”
Jones mentioned that now is the time to restructure and said they will have some meetings before they take on Ireland on Friday at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida.
“Feeling good, this is what we wanted for USA cricket, enjoying it. We will now prepare ourselves again, have some meetings and come back stronger,” he said.
The 29-year-old batsman said that the New York pitch was a bit difficult and more conducive to seam bowling. He also gave a big update about captain Monank Patel, who missed the tie against India due to injury, saying that the skipper will be ready for their last match of the group stage.
He said, “The wicket was a bit difficult, more conducive to seam bowling. So there was no spin. Monank Patel will be fit for the last game, he just has a slight injury.”
In their last match, USA will take on Ireland on Friday at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida, aiming to make it to the Super 8s.
