Rajpura: A large number of farmers participated in the ongoing dharna of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha at Shambhu barrier. Farmers announced that a big Kisan Sabha will be organized on August 31 on completion of 200 days of Shambhu Kisan Dharna.
Speaking on this occasion, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said that the new policy of the central government has posed a big threat to Basmati farmers. This time, on the request of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, farmers cultivated Basmati in 17 percent area. This time Basmati has been cultivated in about 7 lakh hectares of area in Punjab. He said that Chief Minister Mann had announced that the rate of the best varieties will not be allowed to fall below Rs 2300 per quintal, due to which the farmers of the state have planted paddy in more area like 1509, 1692, 1718, 1121 etc. He said that till now the rate of Basmati in Haryana and Punjab is running from Rs 2200 to Rs 2400 per quintal, due to which farmers are suffering losses.
Farmer leader Pandher said that it is unfortunate that the non-political leaders of SKM were stopped at the New Delhi airport on the pretext of religious symbols, as the farmers had to go to Tamil Nadu to attend the Kisan Mahapanchayat. Through this incident, the BJP government is working to confuse the farmers on the issue of religion to divert attention from agricultural issues.
