On being acquitted in the rape case, Lamichhane said – From the very first day, I was convincing myself that I had done nothing wrong.

New Delhi, May 16 (HS). After being acquitted by the Patan High Court on Wednesday in a rape case, Nepal's star spinner Sandeep Lamichhane said that from the very first day he had convinced himself that he had done nothing wrong.

He also said that he will try his best to perform well for his country in his sport in the coming years.

Lamichhane was acquitted by the Patan High Court in a rape case and is now available for selection for the ICC T20 World Cup starting in West Indies and USA from June 1.

The Cricket Association (CAN) had already announced the team for the T20 World Cup. Rohit Paudel is set to lead the young group of players who were named in the squad in early May. However, changes can be made in the team by May 25 and Sandeep can make a place in the team.

After his acquittal, Lamichhane said in a post on Instagram on Wednesday, “It has been more than a year and a half; From the very first day I was convincing myself that I had not done anything wrong. I was implicated in a case where I had done nothing wrong. At last we have reached here. I respect the then decision of the district court and I also respect the decision given by the High Court. I will try my best to take the country forward at the international level.”

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) also revoked the suspension of Nepalese leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane. In a press statement, the CL announced that its decision is in line with the decision of the Patan High Court, which acquitted Lamichhane of all charges.

Patan High Court spokesperson Tirtharaj Bhattarai told the Kathmandu Post that Lamichhane had been acquitted due to “lack of evidence”.

A single-judge bench of the Kathmandu court had found Lamichhane guilty of raping the 18-year-old woman and the sentence was announced on January 10.

The bench had also imposed a fine of around US$2255 on Lamichhane and ordered him to pay around US$1500 as compensation to the victim. On 11 January, following the verdict, Lamichhane was suspended by CAN.
