Om Prakash Gaso, the tireless creator of literature

Om Prakash Gaso's name is also included among the prolific writers of Punjab. He has written in various genres of literature like novel, poetry, children's literature, translation, criticism and prose etc. He is one of the few writers of Punjab who is writing literature in Punjabi language as well as Hindi language. Even after completing ninety years of age, he is still associated with literary creation. Like his walking speed, there is no difference in his writing speed. He not only writes but also keeps propagating literature. If he goes to the city for work, he will definitely bump into you with a bag of books hanging on his shoulder.

Literary Cottage

If you go to his literary hut, you will see him either reading a book or writing something in the garden of his house. He is a writer who loves nature. In his lush green cottage you will see flowering seasonal and ripe fruit plants. He has given fragrance to many deserted places of the city by planting such flowering plants. He will not only talk to you about literature but also He will also express his concern about the polluted environment. He takes literary creation as a tool. Om Prakash Gaso was born on April 9, 1933 in Barnala to father Master Gopal Das and mother Utmi Devi. When the country got independence, Gasso was 14 years old. He saw death dancing in front of his eyes. Even today his eyes fill with tears remembering his childhood friends. This pain of the tragedy of partition is still reflected in his works. Om Prakash's two Elder brothers Jagan Nath and Krishna Das became government employees. The family did not pay much attention to Om Prakash's education. He was sent to a camp in Handhiaya village to study and learn the teachings of Jajmani Prohati. It was here that he gained command of Urdu and turned to studies. After completing 10th, he did PTI. He became eligible to become a teacher and became an employee of the Education Department

His first novel 'Supne Te Sanskar' was published in 1966, with its publication he became Om Prakash Gaso, the first novelist of Barnala city from Master Om Prakash. Along with the duties of a PTI teacher in the school, he also taught Punjabi and Hindi to the students. During his job, he did MA in Punjabi and Hindi subjects. Without M.Phil. Today in his own family, apart from his sons, his grandchildren also have Ph.D. Gasso has been a major contributor to the rise of the literary movement of Barnala. The Punjabi Sahitya Sabha of Barnala is one of the leading societies of Punjab. In the year 1988, under his chairmanship, the Sabha organized a national level conference in the context of progressive ideology. Apart from teaching in schools of Punjab for 37 years, he also taught in colleges for 7 years.

More than six dozen books narrate Gasso's story. Apart from 30 novels in Punjabi language, 20 prose books have also been published. 3 books of children's literature, 2 books of poetry and 2 books of translation and criticism have been given to the readers. Has composed 5 novels and 7 poetry collections in Hindi language. Three books based on his life and work are 'Lok Dhadkan Da Tandoor', 'Punjabi Culture Document' and 'Om Prakash Gaso: Image Talent'. In the third book, readers and writers have presented their views about Gaso. Gaso's books have been published by 'Mitra Mandal Prakashan' only. The list of honors received by him is very long.
