The election of the Lok Sabha Speaker has taken place on the third day of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha. BJP MP and National Democratic Alliance candidate Om Birla has been elected the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. Om Birla was one of the most active MPs and was also known for taking tough decisions as the Speaker. Om Birla, a three-time MP from Kota, Rajasthan, has also been an MLA three times in Rajasthan. In his first term as an MP, he participated in 671 questions and 163 debates with 86 percent attendance. After becoming an MP for the second time in 2019, he was made the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The new Parliament building was constructed during Birla's tenure. Many historic laws were also passed including three criminal laws, removal of Article 370, Citizenship Amendment Act. He took some tough decisions regarding the suspension of 100 Lok Sabha MPs and the security of Parliament.
