Kathmandu, August 21 (HS). The Ministry of Communications has decided to lift the ban on the social network TikTok. On Wednesday, Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has decided to lift the ban on TikTok. This decision is going to come into effect from Thursday.
An official of the Ministry of Communications has informed that the decision taken at the ministerial level will now be presented in the regular cabinet meeting to be held on Thursday. According to this official of the Ministry of Communications, today Minister Gurung has signed the decision to approve the lifting of the ban on the TikTok platform and has sent it to the cabinet for decision.
After the cabinet's decision on Thursday, the app TikTok which was banned across the country will run smoothly. Along with the cabinet's decision, the ministry will write a letter to the Telecom Authority to lift the ban on TikTok. Immediately after this, TikTok will start running from Thursday.
The government issued social media regulation guidelines and decided to ban TikTok in a cabinet meeting on 13 November 2023. The government had decided to ban it, arguing that TikTok is not following the laws and guidelines of Nepal and is spreading distortion in the society and destroying social harmony and family and cultural traditions.
Since the ban, TikTok has been making continuous efforts to lift the ban by giving a written commitment to abide by all the laws and conditions of Nepal. But since the government has not lifted the ban, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chan Song has been expressing his opposition to the ban on TikTok in every political meeting.
