The month of October will now be celebrated as Hindu Heritage Month in the American state of Ohio. The Ohio State House and Senate have passed a bill to designate October as Hindu Heritage Month. “This is a huge victory for Hindus in Ohio and across the country,” state senator Neeraj Antani said after the passage of a bill designating October as Hindu Heritage Month in Ohio. Now, every October we can officially celebrate our Hindu heritage in Ohio.
Amended his bill to HB 173 on the Senate floor
Antani is the first Hindu and Indian American state senator in Ohio’s history and the youngest Hindu and Indian American state or federal elected official in the country.
“This was the result of hard work by Hindu advocates in Ohio and across the country, and I was very pleased to partner with them to get it passed,” Antani said. The day before, he amended his bill to HB 173 on the Senate floor. After this, both the houses passed this law unanimously.
Hindu American Foundation welcomes passage of the bill
‘Ohio is home to millions of unique individuals, each with their own background and story,’ said State Representative Adam Matthews. Matthews was the House sponsor and supporter of the bill and represents a large portion of Warren County, where many Hindus live in the Cincinnati area. The bill will now go to the Governor for signature or veto. The Hindu American Foundation welcomed the passage of the bill.
‘By officially recognizing Hindu Heritage Month each year, HB 173 goes a long way in ensuring that Ohioans can better understand the contributions, culture and traditions of Hindu Americans,’ said Sameer Kalra, Managing Director of HAF And can appreciate them.
