When the NATO alliance began airstrikes, the rebels captured the capital Tripoli. In July 2011, 30 countries of the world recognized the rebel government in Libya. During this time, the influence of Gaddafi and his supporters was limited to his hometown Sirte. But Gaddafi was not safe here either. Gaddafi was killed in Sirte on 20 October 2011.
