On October 18, 2004, such news came that no one could believe for once. The news was that a barbaric and deadly sandalwood smuggler was killed in an encounter. Veerappan, with a thick mustache and a single physique, was a big headache not only for the two states but also for the central government for a few decades. Veerappan, who killed hundreds of elephants for ivory and smuggled sandalwood worth crores, took the lives of more than 150 people during this period, of which more than half were policemen and forest officers and employees. The central government spent Rs 734 crore to catch him. A task force was formed and special training was given to the soldiers, but whenever the chance of his arrest came close, it would slip away.
Veerappan earned crores through illegal smuggling. He used to hunt elephants and sell their skin and tusks and used to smuggle sandalwood and buy weapons with the money he got from it. In the year 2000, he kidnapped the famous South Indian actor Rajkumar and released him after more than 100 days after taking a huge amount of money. During this period, the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu faced a lot of embarrassment.
The last hour of Veerappan, who was successful in dodging the police every time, has finally come. In fact, for treatment he had to come out of the Paparapati forest with two companions. This information reached Tamil Nadu STF which was running an operation to arrest him. As per the plan, STF sent an ambulance to the forest. Veerappan along with his companions fraudulently boarded the ambulance.
STF parked a truck on the way to Veerappan's hospital, in which 22 STF personnel armed with weapons were present. As soon as the ambulance came near the truck, the STF stopped it by hand and Veerappan was asked on the mike to surrender. As soon as the announcement of surrender was made, the undercover STF jawan driving the ambulance got down from the vehicle. After this, Veerappan and his associates started firing from inside the ambulance. STF threw a grenade inside the ambulance and the soldiers started firing. Veerappan was shot in the head and died on the spot.
