Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said that the arrested accused Maulvi Sohail Abubakar Timol is a manager in a thread factory. He used to give tuition to Muslim children for Islamic education. Radical thinker Sohail was in contact with some people sitting in Pakistan and Nepal and wanted to kill some people in India whose identity was linked to Hindutva. His targets included Editor-in-Chief of Sudarshan Television Channel, BJP MLA from Telangana Raja Singh and former spokesperson of the same party Nupur Sharma and National President of Hindu Sanatan Sangh Upadesh Rana.
The Maulvi made a deal worth Rs 1 crore with his handlers based in Pakistan and Nepal. He also wanted to import weapons from Pakistan. Gehlot said, 'After Sohail was detained, we found several incriminating materials from his mobile phone, including an offer of Rs 1 crore to kill Upadesh Rana. For this he was in constant touch with persons/numbers from Pakistan and Nepal. Timol was also found involved in threatening Rana in March this year. The accused used a digital number from Laos to threaten Rana by adding numbers from Pakistan and Nepal in his group call.
Gehlot said, 'Photos and other details found on their phone numbers show that they (accused and associates) were involved in targeting and threatening Sudarshan TV editor-in-chief Suresh Chavhanke, former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and Hyderabad MLA Raja Singh. Included in the application form. For this purpose they were conspiring to raise money and buy weapons. It has also been revealed that by killing Rana, he wanted to disturb the communal harmony in Gujarat during the Lok Sabha elections.
A Crime Branch report said that initial interrogation of the accused revealed that he was contacted by two persons named Dogar and Shahnaz, who had phone numbers from Pakistan and Nepal. It is said that about one and a half years ago, two people had contacted Sohail on social media. He instigated them by saying that Hindu organizations were making fun of the Prophet and they would have to be taught a lesson.
