Mumbai: The number of demat accounts in the country has increased to 17.54 crore with the addition of 43.60 lakh more in September. CDSL and NSDL data shows that on an average, more than 40 lakh demat accounts were added every month in 2024.

Along with the secondary market, the primary market is also growing rapidly in the country and last month a total of 12 IPOs were held in which companies raised Rs 11,058 crore. So far in 2024, companies have raised Rs 64511 crore through 62 IPOs.

A large number of investors are opening demat accounts to participate in public offerings. To get shares in Bharna, investors apply separately in the names of more and more members of their family and for this they have to open separate demat accounts.

30.70 lakh demat accounts were added in September 2023, taking the total number of demat accounts to 12.96 crore. 3.60 crore demat accounts have been added in the first nine months of 2024.

An analyst said the huge increase in the number of demat accounts indicates the growing interest of retail investors in equity investments in the country.

According to a report by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), domestic investment in domestic equities stood at Rs 128 trillion at the end of FY2024, up from Rs 84 trillion in FY2023.
