Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is taking an unprecedented digital initiative to bring the country’s unorganized sector workers, gig workers, small shopkeepers and youth under the ambit of social security and pension. ‘NPS Tatkal’ But it is working fast. In the current system, it takes at least 24 to 48 hours and many technical steps to generate PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number – PRAN) under the National Pension System (NPS) and activate the account. But the new blueprint of the regulator is going to give a revolutionary turn to this entire system. Using India’s robust Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—which includes Aadhaar e-KYC, DigiLocker and UPI—a pension account can now be opened in just 3 easy clicks within minutes. The main objective of this initiative is to eliminate the complex paperwork and lengthy onboarding process associated with the pension scheme and make it accessible to the mobile phones of every Indian.
The ‘NPS Tatkal’ architecture being prepared by the regulator has been made completely paperless, seamless and user-friendly. Now the entire account opening process will be reduced to three quick steps:
-
First Click (Identity Verification): Citizens will directly visit the NPS portal, authorized mobile app or third-party fintech platform (like PhonePe, Google Pay, or bank app) and give consent through their mobile number and digital identity card, which will automatically fetch the name, address and date of birth through DigiLocker or e-KYC.
-
Second Click (Auto-Choice & Nominee Selection): Instead of complex options for choosing a pension fund manager and investment pattern, the system will automatically map the nominee details to the pre-defined ‘Default Life-Cycle Fund’ (Auto Choice) and bank account.
-
Third Click (First Contribution from UPI): As soon as the UPI PIN is entered, the first token investment will be deducted and the account will be activated by instantly generating an active PRAN card on the screen.
The most revolutionary aspect of this new scheme is regarding the minimum investment limit. Currently, to open an NPS Tier-1 account, it is mandatory to make a minimum initial contribution of ₹ 500 and subsequently a minimum of ₹ 500 per transaction. This limitation often becomes a psychological and financial hurdle for daily wage labourers, delivery partners, auto drivers and street vendors. PFRDA to remove this hurdle Micro-Pension Implementing the system. Under this, consumers can use UPI Minimum amount like only ₹10 You can also deposit on daily, weekly or monthly basis as per your convenience. Apart from this, fintech facilities like ‘UPI Auto-Debit’ and ‘Round-up Savings’ (converting the chiller money left after the transaction directly into investment) are also being added, so that citizens can get into the habit of building a regular pension fund without any additional financial burden.
The main differences of the new instant framework and the current process can be easily understood from the comparative table given below:
| Standard/Feature | Current traditional NPS system | Proposed NPS Tatkal Model |
|---|---|---|
| account activation time | 24 to 48 hours (T+2 days) | 3 to 5 minutes (real-time instant) |
| onboarding process | 8 to 12 complex screen/form pages | Just 3 easy clicks |
| minimum initial contribution | ₹500 (Tier-1 account) | Just ₹10 to ₹50 (token amount) |
| Minimum top-up limit | ₹500 per transaction | Starting from ₹10 through UPI |

Many people may wonder how a daily investment of ₹ 10 or ₹ 30 will create a big fund in the future. But the long term of pension funds and the power of compounding effect make small drops into a big ocean. Historically, the equity and debt pension funds of NPS have given an average annual return of 9% to 11%. If a 20-22 year old invests just ₹30 per day (i.e. around ₹900 per month) through NPS Tatkal continuously for 35-40 years at an average expected return of 10%, his total accumulated fund at the time of retirement can reach between ₹35 lakh to ₹50 lakh. Of this, 60% of the amount (approximately ₹25 to ₹30 lakh) can be withdrawn tax-free in lump sum, while the remaining 40% can be obtained as an annuity, giving a lifetime pension of ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 every month. This shows how small regular savings can become a big financial support in old age.
Accounts opened under NPS Tatkal will also be entitled to an additional tax exemption of ₹1.5 lakh under section 80CCD(1) of the Income Tax Act and additional tax exemption of ₹50,000 under section 80CCD(1B) (total annual deduction up to ₹2 lakh) like normal NPS. PFRDA has clarified that even though the process is being made extremely easy in 3 clicks, there will be no compromise on security and anti-money laundering (PMLA) regulations. The account can be opened through UPI auto-verification only if there is 100% matching of bank account name and Aadhaar details. This new initiative of the regulator will prove to be a milestone in taking India from a ‘pension-free society’ to a ‘pension-rich society’.
