Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the regulatory body of the telecom sector, has made a proposal under which if a customer takes a new number, then a specific charge will be levied by the telecom company that issued the number.
Obviously, if this proposal is approved, then the company issuing the new number will collect this charge from the customer. So now if you want to get a new number, then you will have to pay an extra charge for it.
Thus, according to the proposal given by TRAI to levy charges on any telephone number, a one-time fee can be charged for a single number or it is also proposed to charge a specific fee per year for each number. The government can allocate a specific series of numbers to the concerned telecom company and can also conduct auction for a particular number in a centralized manner. Apart from this, according to this proposal, TRAI has also proposed to impose a penalty on unused numbers if a customer does not use the number he has for a long time and if the operator company does not cancel this number to retain the customer. However, telecom operator companies are opposing this new proposal of TRAI.
This new charge will be applicable on both mobile and landline numbers.
