After the retirement of RK Vishwakarma on 31 May 2023, Vijay Kumar was made the new acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh. When Vijay Kumar retired on January 31, 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government made Prashant Kumar the acting DGP. That is, after the removal of Mukul Goyal on May 11, 2022, the work in Uttar Pradesh was being run by the acting DGP for the last two and a half years.
How to become a DGP officer in UP?
As per the procedure prevalent till now for the selection of DGP, the Uttar Pradesh government sends the names of all the officers for the post of DG to the Union Public Service Commission. Before the Union Public Service Commission, the Department of Personal Training i.e. DoPT prepares and sends a panel of three senior-most officers, whose tenure is at least 2 years. The state government does not send the names of those DG post officers who are going to retire in 6 months or less. One officer is made DGP in the name of three officers sent by the Union Public Service Commission.
Why did Yogi government make this change?
