A major administrative decision has come to light amidst protests and political activity in the national capital Delhi, after which there has been an uproar in the political circles. Delhi Police has officially de-notified the historic Jantar Mantar as a protest site. After this strict step of the administration, leaders of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and other political parties have launched a scathing attack on the government and police administration. Calling it a direct attack on the country’s democratic freedom and fundamental rights, CJP leaders have warned that no matter how many restrictions the government imposes, now the entire country will become Jantar Mantar.
Decision to de-notify Jantar Mantar and alternative site
According to the official notice issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, this decision to remove Jantar Mantar from the list of protests has been taken based on the recommendations of a special committee constituted by the Home Ministry. The committee was formed to examine alternative venues in the national capital to maintain a balance between citizens’ right to protest and law and order. The police administration has now declared Ramlila Maidan, Burari Maidan and CBD Ground located in East Delhi as new alternative sites for protests. The administration says that a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will also be issued soon for conducting demonstrations at these new places.
CJP leaders called the government’s decision a dictatorship
As soon as this decision of Delhi Police came to light, leaders of opposition parties and CJP have reacted sharply. CJP leader Abhijit Deepke strongly attacked the social media platform ‘X’ and said that the government wants to crush the fundamental right to express dissent. He sarcastically said that Jantar Mantar is no longer a place of protest because a cowardly administration has turned it into a battlefield, but they have forgotten that now the entire country will become Jantar Mantar.
Another CJP leader Saurav Das also targeted the government and asked whether the Home Ministry had taken any advice from the citizens of the country or related organizations before taking such an arbitrary decision? He said that the way Jantar Mantar is being de-notified, the day is not far when democracy itself will be de-notified in the country. At the same time, another party leader Ashutosh Ranka sarcastically asked the administration why they do not declare Mount Everest as the official place for protests? However, this decision taken regarding Jantar Mantar can create a bigger political controversy in the coming days.
