Jalandhar: Now the fare per passenger in a normal bus from Jalandhar to Delhi will be Rs 505. After four years, the increase of 23 paise per kilometer in bus fares will come into effect from Sunday in the state. Now the fare in ordinary buses running within the state will be Rs 1.45 per kilometer. Last time on July 1, 2020, the bus fare in Punjab was increased by six paise per km.
According to the information received from Punjab Roadways Jalandhar, after the increase of 23 paise per kilometer in ordinary buses, the fare of Delhi has increased from Rs. 460 to Rs. 505, the fare of Amritsar has increased from Rs. 110 to Rs. 130, the fare of Ludhiana has increased from Rs. 85 to Rs. 100, the fare of Pathankot has increased from Rs. 175 to Rs. 200, the fare of Hoshiarpur has increased from Rs. 55 to Rs. 65.
On Saturday, Punjab Transport Department Secretary Dilraj Singh Sanghewalia has issued a notification regarding the increase in bus fares. The special thing is that along with the increase in fare per kilometer, the minimum fare has also been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 15. According to the notification, the fare per kilometer is Rs 1.45 in ordinary buses, Rs 1.74 in HVAC (20 percent more than normal), Rs 2.61 in integral coach (80 percent more than normal) and Rs 2.90 in super integral coach (100 percent more than normal) per km.
On the other hand, Punjab Motor Union executive member and Gagandeep Transport Company MD Sandeep Sharma welcomed the bus fare hike and thanked the state Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar. He said that after the huge hike in diesel prices, the bus operators were demanding a fare hike for a long time. He said that the fare hike will also benefit those small bus operators whose livelihood is based on this business, but due to no fare hike and increased expenses of bus operators, they were facing severe financial crisis.
Let us tell you that due to increasing cost of bus operations, apart from private bus operators, Punjab Roadways was also continuously demanding increase in fare.
Three-wheelers were charging Rs 20 per passenger, while minibuses had a minimum fare of Rs 10.
According to the notification issued by the Transport Department, now the minimum bus fare has also been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 15. Sandeep Sharma said that three-wheelers running a few kilometres within the city are charging Rs 20 per passenger, but the minimum fare in minibuses providing transport services in rural areas is still Rs 10. The increase of Rs 5 in the minimum fare will also provide relief to small bus operators.
