SIM card new rule: With the aim of preventing fraud through SIM card and making it easier for the user, its rules are being changed from time to time. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has changed the mobile number portability rules. This new rule will come into effect from July 1.
TRAI has introduced the draft of Telecom Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2023 to prevent SIM swap fraud. Which has been prepared on the basis of the recommendations of DOT (Department of Telecommunications). TRAI issued new rules on 15 March 2024. The new rules will come into force across the country from 1 July 2024. This will help in curbing fraud.
You will have to wait to get a new SIM card
If your SIM card is stolen or damaged, you may have to wait for some time to get a new SIM. Earlier, if the SIM card was stolen or damaged, you could immediately get a SIM card from the store. But now in this case its locking period has been increased. Now users will have to wait for 7 days. Only after this will users get a new SIM card. According to the new rule, people who have recently swapped their SIM card will not be able to port their mobile number. Customers can do this after 7 days. That is, after the change in MNP rules, you will get a new SIM card only after the next seven days.
Why was the decision taken?
It has been found in many cases that once the SIM card is stolen, that number is activated on another SIM card and various crimes are committed. This decision has been taken with the aim of preventing incidents like online fraud. A notification was issued by TRAI in this regard in March. Now users like Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio need to be careful.
How will portability happen?
TRAI has issued unique porting codes to telecom operators to further tighten security measures. In which this code has to be presented seven days before the expiry of the SIM card. The user has to send a portability message to his current telecom operator and receive an eight-digit code. Let us tell you that the rule is to port the SIM card number within the same region.
