Now electricity connection will be available in three to seven days, amendment in Electricity (User Rights) Rules, 2020 approved

The process of installing rooftop solar power units has also been simplified. Additionally, users living in multi-storey flats have also been given the right to choose the type of connection. Separate billing for common areas and back-up generators has been ensured in residential societies. The amended rule also has a provision for inspection of meters installed by distribution companies to verify electricity consumption on the complaint of consumers. Electricity Minister RK Singh said that the interests of consumers are paramount for the government and these amendments have been made keeping this in mind.

No technical feasibility required for solar power systems up to 10 kW

The period for taking a new electricity connection has been reduced from seven days to three days in metropolitan areas, from 15 days to seven days in other municipal corporation areas and from 30 days to 15 days in rural areas. However, in rural areas of hilly areas, the time limit for taking new connections or making amendments in existing connections will remain the same as before, 30 days. Installing a rooftop solar system has also been made simpler and faster. The ministry said solar systems up to 10 kW will not require technical feasibility study. With this, the time limit for technical feasibility study for high efficiency solar power systems has been reduced from 20 days to 15 days. If the studies are not completed within the stipulated time then it will be considered correct.

Separate connection can be taken for charging EV

Under the new rules, consumers can now take a separate electricity connection to charge their electronic vehicles (EVs). People living in co-operative housing societies, multi-storey buildings, residential colonies etc. will now have the option to choose private connection for all or single point connection for the entire family from the distribution licensee. Additionally, if there is a complaint that the meter reading is not as per the actual power consumption, distribution licensees will now have to install an additional meter within five days from the date of receipt of the complaint. This additional meter will be used to verify the readings.
