The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery of Banaras Hindu University Institute of Medical Sciences and Sir Sunderlal Hospital has achieved another important achievement. The doctors of the department have successfully performed a complex surgery. A 61-year-old patient resident of Assam was suffering from heart disease for 5 years. Patient Lal Mohar Singh, originally from Bihar, was being treated through medicine at the Cardiology Department of Sir Sunderlal Hospital of BHU. But despite taking the medicine for such a long time, there was not much improvement in his health. Finally, he was referred to the OPD of Cardiothoracic Surgery Department with the advice of operation. According to the angiography report, he complained of massive blockage in the main veins of his heart and the diagnosis was said to be bypass surgery.

Seeing the patient's age and condition of suffering from diabetes, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, senior surgeon of the cardiothoracic department, advised him to undergo operation under minimally invasive heart surgery procedure. If we want to understand it in common language, then in a way it is a very special type of operation in heart surgery. It is performed with a very small incision. It is used for artery graft located inside the chest. In this way, due to the large incision on the chest and no incision on the legs, the wound related to the operation is only 3 inches. After the operation, it takes less time for the patient's wound to heal and he has to face very less problems like pain. Since a pump is not used, there is no need to give blood during or after the operation. The patient was discharged within five days. This special type of operation is usually performed in very specialized institutions. Whose number is possible only in a few big health centers in the state. But now the Cardiothoracic Department of BHU is moving forward at a very fast pace in the direction of providing modern and better treatment to heart disease patients.

The surgeons of the cardiothoracic department have proved that the operations which were possible only in big hospitals and institutions abroad or in India. Where common people could not reach. Former head of the department, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, who was leading the complex operation, said that carrying out such an operation was a big challenge here.
