The state government is continuously taking new and modern steps to promote agriculture and animal husbandry in Bihar. In this series, now the Bihar government has taken such a revolutionary decision in the field of livestock development and breed improvement, which has become a topic of discussion across the country. Now DNA test will be done for cows and buffaloes in Bihar to identify them and improve their quality. Generally, as soon as the name of DNA testing comes to our mind, the thought of forensic or criminal investigation comes to our mind, but this step of the government has been taken completely with the aim of doubling the income of cattle farmers scientifically and economically. The main objective of this ambitious scheme of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department is to improve the genetic quality of the state’s cattle, increase milk production capacity and promote breeds that give more profits at lower costs.
Traditionally, the work of animal husbandry has been going on in our country and state for generations, but due to lack of scientific approach and modern technology, many times the animal husbandry does not get success as much as they work hard. The productivity of animals of ordinary breed is low and the expenditure on their food is high. To deal with this problem, the Bihar government has decided to take the help of ‘Genomic Selection’ technology. Through DNA testing, it will be easier for scientists and animal experts to find out which calf or paddy has the hidden ability to produce high quality milk and the power to fight diseases. Within a few days or months of birth, through DNA samples, it will become clear which animal will prove to be a better breed in the future, so that farmers can be saved from unnecessary expenses in rearing unfit animals.
Under this new scheme of Bihar government, the genome of indigenous and high breed cows and buffaloes will be studied through scientific methods. Through this, sex-sorted semen technology will also be made more effective so that farmers get only heifers in more than 90 percent of the cases, so that the milk production business can be carried forward rapidly. When the DNA of animals is mapped at an early age, it will be easier for farmers to choose which high quality bull or semen they should use. Through this entire process, within a short time, an excellent and healthy army of milch animals will be created in the state, which will firmly place Bihar in the category of leading milk producing states of the country.
There is a large section of people in the rural areas of Bihar whose livelihood completely depends on animal husbandry and milk selling. Due to expensive fodder and animals giving less milk, farmers are not able to get the expected profits. This DNA based genome scheme of the government will directly boost the rural economy. When farmers already know the genetic potential of the animals they have, they will be able to manage them better. Apart from this, the demand for high breed animals remains high across the country, due to which the cattle farmers will be able to earn good income by selling the calves of improved breed. The government is working to upgrade veterinary hospitals and laboratories in all the districts of the state to implement this scheme with complete transparency and ease.
This step of Bihar government is proof that now Artificial Intelligence, Genetics and modern science are being used on a large scale even in traditional sectors like farming and animal husbandry. Moving away from traditional methods, this genome-based scientific initiative will not only curb genetic diseases in animals, but will also create a new history in the field of milk production. This scheme is going to prove to be no less than a boon for the cattle farmers of Bihar, because it will reduce the cost and increase the profit manifold. In the coming time, when this project will be fully implemented on the ground, Bihar will emerge as an example for other states of the country in the field of animal husbandry and breed improvement.
