Paris, June 5 (HS). Defending champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open 2024 before the quarter-finals due to a knee injury suffered during his marathon fourth-round win over Francisco Cerundolo, the organisers said on Tuesday.
The withdrawal from the tournament ends the Serbian's hopes of winning a record 25th Grand Slam trophy and will also result in him losing the world number one ranking at the end of this month to Italian Jannik Sinner.
“Due to a torn medial meniscus in the right knee (detected during an MRI scan), Djokovic, who was scheduled to play Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals, has been forced to withdraw from the Roland Garros tournament,” the organisers said in an official statement.
