Mumbai: The government has set a target of producing 170 crore tonnes of coal from captive and commercial coal blocks in the country in the current financial year. On the other hand, the government has directed to keep the imported coal based power plants operational till October.
147.2 million tonnes of coal was mined from captive and commercial blocks in FY2024, 26 percent more than in FY2023.
Government sources said that those who have been allotted coal blocks have been assured of producing 17 crore tonnes of coal. Meanwhile, according to another report, the government has directed imported coal-based power plants to operate at full capacity by October 15. Earlier this notification was till June 30.
It is believed that this notification of the government has come in view of the possibility of higher demand for electricity in the summer of the current year. In the last financial year, the demand for electricity in the country saw an increase of eight percent.
